The Day of Atonement

I'm a bit behind in my reading through the Bible this year.
I'm in Deuteronomy and reviewing some thoughts from Leviticus.

There is a progression in "atonement” enactments:

  1. one animal for one person - Adam and Eve in the Garden
  2. one lamb for one family - the Passover lamb
  3. one sacrifice for the nation - “the day of atonement”
  4. one sacrifice for the entire world - Jesus Christ - "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)
The first three are "enactments" because true atonement is SOLELY based upon the work of Christ. The prior three point forward to Jesus' crucifixion.

On the Day of Atonement, two male goats are presented as offerings.
  1. One is sacrificed as a sin offering, pointing to Christ's death paying the penalty for our sins.
  2. The second goat is called the scapegoat. The High Priest would lay his hand on the goat, to symbolize our sins being transferred, and the goat was led into the wilderness. "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." (Psalm 103:12)
